Native dogs of Switzerland, Entlebucher Mountain Dogs were historically used to move cows from pasture to pasture in the Alps. The Entlebucher is the smallest of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds. They are medium sized, compact, strongly muscled, elongated drovers. They have short, hard and shiny coats, are bright black with symmetrical markings of pure white on blaze, muzzle, chest, and feet along with shades of rich fawn to mahogany present on the eyebrows and between the black and white markings.

Prized for their agreeable nature, ease of training, and devotion to family, Entlebucher Mountain Dogs possess an excellent work ethic and the ability to work alone or in harmony with their master. Although primarily a drover, Mountain Dogs excel at competitive sports and are willing and enthusiastic partners in any athletic canine activity chosen by their master.

Entlebuchers are confident dogs, neither shy nor vicious, and may be reserved with strangers. They are lively, active, persistent, self-assured and determined. Cheerful and capable of learning, they are loyal and protective of family, herd and property. They are highly intelligent, versatile and adaptable with a strong willingness to work, and are quick and responsive to commands from their owners, making them especially suited as companions, herding and general all-purpose dogs.
